The destination contains the oldest guest ranch still operating in the entire Rocky Mountain Region and the oldest continuously operating hotel in Colorado, The Elkhorn Lodge. Rounding out the region's eclectic variety of historical attractions is the only intact dude ranch turned into a research facility in Rocky Mountain National Park, the McGraw Ranch; the oldest movie theater in the United States; and the 9th oldest national park in the country, Rocky Mountain National Park (celebrating its 100th birthday in 2015).

 

Perhaps the most notable historical attraction is The Stanley Hotel. Built by wealthy businessman Freelan Oscar Stanley - who was known for his steam-powered car, the Stanley Steamer - the hotel is one of the most important and significant landmarks in Estes Park dating back just over 100 years. The 1980 film "The Shining" was based on a book written by author Stephen King in room 217 of The Stanley Hotel. Visitors can experience a ghost tour highlighting "The Shining" at the Stanley Hotel.
