Beat the summer heat with a cool book purchased at the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale slated for Aug. 6 to 8 at Estes Park's Conference Center, 201 S. St. Vrain Ave.

Friends Sale Coordinator Larry Edwards said nearly 40,000 books, videos, CDs, DVDs and audio books are collected, sorted, boxed and hauled to storage.

Friday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. is Friends of the Library Preview Night, where Friends members will get the first opportunity to purchase the materials donated throughout the year. If you're not already a member, stop by the Estes Valley Library and buy a membership for only $10 for an individual or $20 for a family. Friends' volunteers will also sell memberships at the door of the sale.

On Saturday morning the Friends throw the doors open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, the doors are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for "bag day," when you can fill a Safeway bag with books for only $5.

At the 2009 sale, the Friends sold more than $26,000 in books and other items and raised another $1,200 in memberships. Money earned from that sale helped fund the digitization of the Library's local history archive.
