Join YMCA of the Rockies for our Winter Ecology Workshop, led by knowledgeable instructor and Estes Park local, Steve Johnson.

Our Winter Ecology Workshop is an immersive experience designed to explore the unique characteristics and challenges of the winter environment. Participants will study physical geography, including winter weather patterns and slope and aspect variability, as well as conduct a detailed snowpack study. A highlight of the course will be constructing a winter snow shelter.

The workshop will also include animal tracking and an exploration of plant and animal adaptations to the cold. Discussions and observations will focus on climate change and its effects on winter ecosystems.

Potential locations for the course include Moraine Park, Bear Lake, Lily Lake, and other accessible areas within Rocky Mountain National Park. Participants should be prepared to walk or snowshoe up to a mile at elevations reaching 9,500 feet.

This workshop is perfect for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of winter ecology while enjoying the beauty of the Rockies.

About the Instructor: 
Steve Johnson is a long time Estes Park resident. He has 25 years of experience as an outdoor educator and 12 years of experience as a science teacher in the Estes Park Schools. He currently works part-time as an Environmental Educator for the YMCA of the Rockies, leading young people through experiential learning, and as a Hikemaster where he guides people on the trails and peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. He has many seasons of winter camping experience as a Boy Scout and Boy Scout leader, and a lifetime of experience as an outdoor enthusiast!
