Preserving Stories for the Future: A Storytelling Workshop

The stories of your life, your family, and your experiences are gifts to the future. As a storyteller, I usually share fairytales and folktales from various cultures. But I also recount a personal story based on my 4x-great-aunt Jennie's memoirs of growing up on a farm in Ohio that was part of the Underground Railroad.

Her pages offer a remarkable view into daily life in the mid-1800s, showing how everyday events, often overlooked, can reveal so much about people and places. Reading her accounts made me appreciate the importance of recording our own lives, these details, decades later, help us understand both our roots and the world around us. That’s the spirit I hope this workshop will inspire.

Workshop Overview: What to Expect and How to Prepare

This workshop is all about exploring stories from your life that could fascinate future generations. Some ideas to consider:

  • A concert that became legendary (or almost did).
  • A medical breakthrough you witnessed or experienced.
  • A favorite teacher who left a lasting impression.
  • The adventure of getting your first credit card, house, or car.
  • Memories of protests, marches, or impactful news events.
  • Your first record, favorite musician, or early technology.
  • Ways life has changed so much that your upbringing now feels “unbelievable.”
  • Holiday traditions, or cross-country travel before interstates.

Think about the moments that, a century from now, will seem almost unbelievable—or might fascinate even your grandchildren.

What to Bring

Please bring something to write with: pen and paper, or a computer, whichever you prefer.

We’ll brainstorm ideas together, then start capturing memories in writing. Some of you may eventually want to record these stories on video, and this workshop is a great place to begin.

This is a relaxed, pressure-free environment focused on sharing ideas and experiences. No judgment, no pressure, just an opportunity to explore and preserve your unique stories.
