This class uses built environments—buildings, fences, roads, and so forth—to explore the human and environmental history of the Kawuneeche Valley. We will begin with an indoor introduction to the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park’s transformation from a Native American homeland, to a focus of American settlement, to its inclusion in the national park system. We will go afield to encounter and interpret the material vestiges of Ute inhabitation, mining, homesteading, water diversion, dude ranching, and federal preservation. Throughout the day, we will ponder the ways in which people and the valley environment have shaped each other over the centuries.
