This course is designed for the recreational traveler who has little or no experience using a GPS and/or GPS owners who would like to gain a greater understanding of their receivers. Emphasis will be placed on using the GPS with hard copy topographic maps and with digital maps from the Web. Topics to be covered include: GPS functions and limitations; GPSs in your hand and in your car; demystifying datums, projections, and grids; plotting waypoints at home and in the field; use of GPS with U.S.G.S. and other topographic maps. All material is provided, and a few GPS receivers will be available for loan. An understanding of U.S.G.S. topographic maps is helpful, but is not required. An exercise in Rocky Mountain National Park will be conducted in the morning or afternoon, depending upon weather. By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge to navigate in the backcountry with greater confidence.
